Yeah, you can use an Operating System Virtualization software, such as Parallells Desktops, which lets you run any OS, inside of your current one. You get an application window where your other OS is, and you can switch between them smoothly on the fly.

Or you can partition your hard drive and install the OS directly onto that, and choose what partition to boot off when your computer starts up.

If you're switching to ubuntu download the Live CD first.

Put it in and boot from that. Check if everything works (Display, sound etc..)

The installer can automatically resize your hdd during installation. If you have some free space (20+ GB), use the partition editor to create a custom partition scheme as follows:

/dev/sda1 - Windows NTFS partition
/dev/sda5 - / (6 GB) This is the root partition. It has the entire OS on it
/dev/sda6 - /home (balance space - 2GB) This is the home partition. It has all user files like your documents, music videos etc. Make this drive as large as possible.
/dev/sda7 - swap (2GB) This is the swap partition. It has the same function as the windows page file. It is only used when your computer runs out of RAM... Its also reformatted at boot so that no fragmentation occurs.

Follow the rest of the installation steps.

During boot choose Ubuntu.

Welcome to the wondrous and glorious world of linux.

Put the cd in and boot. Install java. Test minecraft. Odds are that if your computer is a year + old it should work flawlessly.
